Build A Wheel → Build A Wheel Guide and How To

Velocity Rims & Hubs, American Classic Hubs, DT Swiss-Sapim & more...

Getting high quality wheels at a good price is easy. Our Build A Wheel has hundreds of rims, hubs and spoke options. Wheels can be built from $99 and up. Velocity USA has rims that are very very strong and make a good value. Use our tips below to get great wheels and save hundreds over comparable wheel sets.

Racing - Lightweight Wheels
Get the fewest spokes possible. American Classic and DT Swiss and Velocity all have hubs under 100 g for the front hub. It is possible to build a 1300 g wheel-set. The Aerohead is the lightest rim.

Tubeless Wheels
Any Velocity rim can be made tubeless using Stans No Tubes. They even have a section on Stans website just for Velocity rims. Follow the recommendations and build a righteous wheel.

Downhill Wheels
The Psycho rim has eyelets, is wider than most and is very strong. Why get a wimpy made in the far east rim with a fancy name when you can get aircraft grade aluminum and a rim known for being strong. The Cliffhanger is another choice for strong downhill rim. Choose the sturdy heavier hubs and 14 gauge spokes for best results.

Tandem Wheels
The Dyad might be the strongest 700c rim in the world and makes for an elegant tandem wheel. Velocity has tandem specific hubs and the spokes you need. Three cross lacing is the best choice for strength.

Commuter Wheels
The Synergy is a great looking eyeleted rim for class and appeal. Makes a great rim for your commutes too. Any Velocity rim would be suited for commuting. 32 hole front and 36 hole back gives the wheel-set a nice look and go with 36 holes on both if you weigh more than 250lbs or plan on doing extreme things.

Everyday Wheels
Velocity rims and hubs can be matched to make inexpensive wheels. We already have wheels built for under $100 but for a truly unique wheel, use the build a wheel to choose color options.

Manufacturer Catalogs
Use manufacturer catalogs to further the possibilities! We encourage our customers to download the catalogs so they can see all the nice stuff the manufacturers put in there.

We Like Velocity Rims
We at EBTire are able to sell any rim we want but we like Velocity. Why? Because they have a good selection of rim extrusions in all the diameters and hole drillings plus the rims are strong and durable. For example: a name brand wheel-set that sells for over $900 uses DT Swiss Spokes, American Classic hubs and the name brand rim to make a very expensive wheel-set. You can get practically the same wheel-set from us using Velocity rims while all the other components stay the same. The hand-built wheel from Velocity will last longer, take more weight and end up costing you hundreds of dollars less.

Choose Rim Style and Color

Choose Rim and Spoke Holes

Choose Hubs - Spoke Holes

Choose Spokes and Lacing
Radial Lacing = looks good but weight limits
1 Cross = good performance, weight limit
2 Cross = no weight limits
3 Cross - very strong

Special Orders
Our shopping cart tries to stay current but our manufacturers are always adding items. If you find an item you wish to include in the Build A Wheel, by all means let us know. We can accommodate just about any request.

When comparing rims, take a look at the cross section. How thick the walls are and its' construction determine how strong the rim is. Rims manufacturers around the world use similar extrusions. Velocity rims are stronger than the others because of (a.) wall thickness and (b.) quality of aluminum. Each Velocity rim is crafted in Australia using aircraft grade aluminum. All the other manufacturers use varying degrees of aluminum but none are as strong as Velocity. Our customers who crashed and pancaked other rims tell us this.

Ordering Products not in our shopping cart
The relationships we build with manufacturers and suppliers allow us to sell products not on our website but that are in the manufacturer catalogs. In many cases, we only list the tires or wheels in the catalogs but the catalog has plenty of product you may be interested in. When building a wheel, use the manufacturer catalogs to educate yourself about the product specifications and to find additional products not on our website. Any catalog item can be purchased so call or email us.

Hub Spacing - is the distance between the forks. Don't pry the forks apart to make wheels fit. Measure the distance between the forks to ensure accuracy. The front forks on most bikes are the same at 120mm and the rear ones are different.

Road Hubs = 130mm (usually)
ATB Hubs = 135mm
Tandem Hubs = 140mm or 145mm
Track Hubs = 120mm

Hub Spline - is the area that fits into the rear wheel. There are a series of notches or grooves that mate into a corresponding area in the wheel. Shimano hubs are evenly spaced, while Campagnolo hubs have uneven spaced splines. Looking at pictures of hubs on our website, it will be very easy to tell the difference.
