I have been waiting months for the
chance to try these new tires from Schwalbe, and I have to say
that since I tried them, Schwalbe now has a customer for life!
The set I have is 700 X 23, and can be pumped up to 145 PSI. I
tried them first at my usual 110 PSI, and thought that they were
nice, comparable to any of the other high end tires, nothing too
terribly special about them. However, when I rode them at 140
PSI, I was positively amazed!
The pressure was not as high as tubies, however, there was that
same great tubular ride quality, but without the harshness
associated with the 200PSI. I did not feel every nib in the
road, it all felt good, the handling was just fantastic, and
there seemed to be less rolling resistance. I am not a
physicist, so I can't say for sure, all I know is that it felt a
lot easier to ride and roll...
The weather on the day I tested at the higher pressure was, by
randonneuring standards, PERFECT! (which is to say it was 38
degrees and raining) The rain did not seem to bother the
traction on these tires around the corners!! I have just over
200 miles on these tires so far, and if it weren't for the dirt
from riding in the rain, I would never know these tires were
anything but brand new.
The good: These tires are good at standard pressure, but AWESOME
when you PUMP - THEM - UP!
The bad: I have found nothing so far.
The Ugly: Well, everyone who has seen them has been asking me
where to get them, so they can't be terrible looking! However,
even if they were, I would still recommend these tires. They are
awesome, and that is all there is to it!
